Out of the Shadow; Into the Light
A fascinating exhibition of historic photographs, some of which have not been seen for over 100 years. Selected from the museum’s collections, the prints have all been painstakingly produced from scans of the original glass plate negatives, as part of a collaborative project between Maidstone Museum & Bentlif Art Gallery and Maidstone Camera Club.

Introduction
The Maidstone Camera Club carried out the careful work of scanning, cataloguing and conserving this unique collection of over 6000 glass plate negatives. To date over 800 images have been scanned and made into positives.

The images chosen for this exhibition come from four important collections of negatives: Cole, Ruck, Marley and Old Maidstone. The majority of the Cole Collection was taken on the Isle of Sheppey between 1870 and 1900. The Ruck and Old Maidstone Collections were taken at roughly the same time, but mostly in Maidstone and its environs. Marley, himself a former Maidstone Camera Club member was photographing similar Maidstone scenes, but in the early decades of the twentieth century. All of these photographs may have been taken at different times and in different places, but what they all share is a pin sharp quality which surely must stand as a testament to the skill of the early photographers.
